About the Retina
The retina is a thin layer of tissue located at the back of the eye. Its primary function is to convert light into nerve signals, which are then transmitted via the optic nerve to the brain. The brain processes these signals, enabling you to interpret the images you see.
The retina contains about 200 million neurons, including two types of photoreceptors: rods and cones. The macula, an oval-shaped, pigmented area of tissue located in the center of the retina, is responsible for controlling central vision.
Because of its delicate nature, the retina is vulnerable to various conditions, including those caused by accidents, aging, hereditary disorders, and complications from other diseases like diabetes or high blood pressure.
The experienced team at Mid Atlantic Retina Specialists utilizes advanced therapies and surgical approaches, maintaining a strong focus on consistency and detail to deliver the highest quality retinal treatment available.
